01.12 | Matthew 5, Blessed are those that get it.

1Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2and he began to teach them saying:
3“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
 4Blessed are those who mourn,
      for they will be comforted.
 5Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
      for they will be filled.
 7Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8Blessed are the pure in heart,
      for they will see God.
 9Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
10Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

First of all, there is a soap opera on right now, I don’t know which one, but it’s awful.

Secondly, look at verse three, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for they will inherit the kingdom of heaven.” What do YOU think Jesus meant by “poor in spirit?”

  1. I think there is a missing comma or something. When I look at the rest of the verses there is a polar opposite between the situation and the reward, so to me if the reward is ‘the kingdom of heaven’ the opposite would be having no possessions now. But I think the qualifier is the ‘in spirit’, meaning the poor who are of Christ. Thats what I think anyway, off the cuff though, because I have never thought about it before. Thanks for pointing out!!!

  2. I’ve always thought of the poor in spirit as those that humble themselves. Those who consciously empty themselves and ask to be filled. As in: Blessed are you when you aren’t full of all your own solutions, full of your own thoughts, your own agenda. Blessed are you when you let Me fill your void. Then wherever you walk and whatever you do will be infused with My rule and power.
